Sri Lankan left-handed batsman Upul Tharanga on February 23 announced his retirment from international cricket. Tharanga last played for Sri Lanka in 2019 during their tour of South Africa, in Cape Town. Tharanga took to his Twitter and Facebook account to break the news.

“As the good old saying goes “All good things must come to an end”, I believe it is time for me to bid farewell to my International Cricket Career after over 15 years of giving the game my all,” Tharanga’s statement read.

“I leave behind a road traveled with fond memories and great friendships. I am thankful to Sri Lanka Cricket for always having faith and the trust vested in me,” the statement continued.

He played 31 Tests for Sri Lanka in which he has scored three centuries and eight fifties. He also scored 1,54 runs at an average of 21.89. Having made his Test debut against India in Ahmedabad in December 2005, he played his last against the same team in Pallekele in 2017.

In his ODI career, he scored 6,951 runs at an average of 33.74 in the 235 matches since his debut in August 2005.

In ODIs, he has 15 centuries and 37 half-centuries, with a career-best score of an unbeaten 174; which is also the second-highest by a Sri Lankan in ODIs.

He also has the distinction of the fifth-best century-maker for Sri Lankan, after Sanath Jayasuriya, Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene

One of the underrated cricketers of the Sri Lankan cricket team, Tharanga captained the ODI side on and off.

The left-handed batsman also has played 26 T20Is, notching up 407 runs with a best of 47.
