Nearly three tonnes of Afghanistan heroin with the street worth Rs 19,900 crore have been confiscated from a Gujarat port, reported AFP on Monday quoting officials. Two arrests have been made in the matter so far.

According to AFP, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) found the heroine at Gujarat’s Mundra Port. The drugs were kept in two containers marked as carrying talc. The seized consignment carried nearly 2,000 kg of heroin in one container and another 1,000 kg of heroin in another container.

According to the agency, the consignment originated from Afghanistan and was shipped from a port in Iran to Gujarat. The operation to bust the racket has been underway since September 14.

“Searches have been conducted in Ahmedabad, Delhi, Chennai, Gandhidham and Mandvi in Gujarat,” the agency said in a statement adding that the consignment is worth Rs 19,900 crore.

The DRI said that the initial investigation also reveals the involvement of Afghan nationals in shipping the drug consignment. However, no Afghan nationals have been arrested so far.

The seizure is dubbed as the biggest drug haul in Gujarat so far and perhaps in India as well.

According to The Times Of India, two persons, who have been arrested in connection with the haul, have been sent to custody for 10 days by a Bhuj Court to help agencies probe the matter further.

“The investigation so far has revealed the involvement of Afghan nationals in the incident, too. Questioning is on to understand the possible destination, the operation of the cartel, and other persons involved,” TOI quoted an official as saying.

The arrested individual is a couple from Chennai, who is currently living in Delhi, reported TOI quoting sources. The agency, however, has not yet revealed the couple’s role in drug trafficking.

Afghanistan, from where the consignment has been originated and shipped is the world’s biggest producer of heroin. It supplies between 80-90% of global output.

Heroin production has been further boomed in the war-torn country in recent years, majorly to help fund the militant group, Taliban, which has now returned to power in the country.
