One of India’s most prominent English news website published a video related to police brutality in China. In the one-minute, 22 second video, two policemen in China can be seen roughly pushing and shoving a woman. The woman is seen holding a toddler.  However, the video is from an incident that happened in 2017, contradicting the claim of it being a recent incident.

Following a reverse image search on the keyframes of the video by fact-checking website Boomlive, it has been revealed that the video is from a 2017 incident in a suburb of Shanghai in China. China Global TV Network (CGTN) on September 1, 2017, had published a report that said an argument between the woman and the policemen regarding a parking ticket escalated, following which the policemen became aggressive and one of them slammed the woman to the pavement and forcefully restrained her with the help of the other officer.

The headline for the published video says, ‘On cam: Chinese cops ruthlessly slams woman carrying her baby on the ground.’ Similar to the CGTN report, it can be seen in the video that the officer slams the woman on the ground which sends the toddler crashing down on the pavement. As some of the people passing by come to rescue the toddler, the policemen continue restraining the mother.

The video has been tweeted and retweeted multiple times recently. This comes at a time when widespread protests are taking place in the United States following the killing of African American George Floyd by the Minneapolis police.

This video had become viral in 2017, following which the Municipal Bureau of Public Security issued a statement and suspended the involved officers. According to the CGTN report, the mother and toddler were immediately rushed to the hospital for a check-up.
