Amid the nationwide outrage over the Hathras horror, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA for Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district has opined that the parents of young women must inculcate good values in them, ANI reported.

“It’s the duty of all mothers and fathers to imbibe good values in their daughters and bring them up in cultured environments,” MLA Surendra Singh told ANI.

“Such incidents can be stopped only with ‘sanskar’ [culture and values] and not with ‘shashan’ [governance] or talwar [sword],” he added.

“The government’s job is to protect the people but it is also the responsibility of parents to teach children polite behaviour and manners,” the MLA said.

“Our country can become beautiful with the combination of ‘sanskar’ and ‘sarkar’ [government],” he added.

The legislator’s comments have surfaced as the nation is enraged over the alleged gang-rape of the 19-year-old Dalit woman in UP’s Hathras. The woman succumbed to her injuries at Delhi’s Safdurjung Hospital.
