In the world of cricket, bowling a no-ball is a big no-no which often leads to heavy consequences.

“No balls are something which hurt you as a team,” Indian cricketer Virat Kohli said after India lost to South Africa in 2018. 

Here are three accounts in recent history when India lost at the hands of a no-ball. 

2022 ICC Women’s World Cup-  Deepti Sharma vs South Africa

Packed with twists and turns, Sunday’s match between South Africa and India saw the South African side earning one final lifeline in the last over of the game when Indian spinner Deepti Sharma bowled a no-ball. The delivery resulted in an extra run for SA and an extra wicket.

By winning the match, the Proteas crushed India’s hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s World Cup. 

2017 Champions Trophy – Jasprit Bumrah vs Pakistan

A turning point in the match, this no-ball continues to give Indian cricket fans nightmares. 

Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman pretty early in the Champions Trophy final but a replay displayed that the bowler had overstepped the crease.

Zaman went on to score a century and helped his team score a huge 338 in the first innings. India lost the match by 180 runs.

2016 T20 World Cup – Ravi Ashwin vs West Indies

With a mammoth 192 on the scoreboard, India was fantasizing about heading straight into their second consecutive World T20 final.

The fantasy was further strengthened after Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Chris Gayle in the first over, leaving Wankhede’s crowd roar in exhilaration.

What followed was Ravi Ashwin dismissing Lendl Simmons for 18. The delivery made India’s celebrations come to a halt, with the umpires checking and finding that Ashwin had overstepped the crease. This resulted in Simmons gaining a reprieve and smashing an unbeaten 82 to toss India out of the World Cup.
