The Indian contingent after scripting history at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics touched down in India on Monday. Their arrival prompted a massive celebration at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi. Crazy scenes ensued at the airports where supporters jostled to catch a glimpse of the heroes.

The athletes were welcomed by a Sports Authority of India (SAI) delegation headed by its Director-General Sandeep Pradhan, who was accompanied by the Athletics Federation of India head Adille Sumariwala.

Ecstatic fans, family members, huge motorcades and the tri-colour flying high were some of the scenes that got captured on cameras outside the airport. As the players exited the airport, they were received amid huge cheers and people shouting at the top of their lungs.

However, the huge gathering saw the Indians flout COVID-19 social distancing norms as scores of people were seen without masks.

“We are here to support our heroes. We are proud of them,” said a young girl, who claimed to be a budding athlete herself.

The most dramatic exit was made by bronze-medallist wrestler Bajrang Punia, who was seen greeting and waving towards his supporters from the sunroof of an SUV, which had several fans clinging to it defying all traffic rules as it made its way out of the airport.

“We will try to do better next time, I had a knee problem,” Punia, who had entered the Games as a gold favourite, said.

The athletes were garlanded and presented with bouquets on arrival and were applauded by the airport staff as they made their way out to utter chaos.

At the Tokyo Games, India achieved their best-ever medal tally of 7, surpassing their previous best of six medals (2012 London Olympics).

India returned with one gold (Neeraj Chopra), two silver (Mirabai Chanu, Ravi Kumar Dahiya), and four bronze (PV Sindhu, Lovlina Borgohain, men’s hockey, Bajrang Punia).

India had sent a 228-strong contingent for the Games, including 121 athletes.
