India on Wednesday recorded 126,789 new cases of COVID-19, the Union Health Ministry’s data released on Thursday showed. 685 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours. With the new cases, the country’s total virus tally has reached 12,928,574. 166,862 people have died of the disease.

There are 910,319 active COVID-19 cases, while 11,851,393 have recovered.

252,677,379 samples have been tested for COVID-19, till April 7. This includes 1,237,781 samples tested on Wednesday, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said.

India started its mass vaccination drive against coronavirus on January 16. Till now, 90,198,673 people have received at least a single dose of one of the two COVID-19 vaccines approved by India.

The two vaccines are — Covaxin and Covishield. While the former is India’s indigenous vaccine developed by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech, the latter is AstraZeneca’s jab being manufactured at Pune-based Serum Institue.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the second dose of Covaxin on Thursday. He was given the vaccine at All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi.
