Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Samarkand, Uzbekistan on Thursday to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit. Modi will be in Uzbekistan for a “brief period”, India’s Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said.
According to the schedule released by the PMO, Modi will have bilateral meetings with at least three foreign leaders — Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Iranian President Ayatollah Sayyid Ebrahim Raisi.

The Indian Prime Minister will not be meeting his Pakistani counterpart Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese President Xi Jinping, who will attend the summit in Uzbekistan.

The event in the ancient sultanate of Samarkand is part of Xi’s first foreign trip since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic more than two years ago, underscoring Beijing’s desire to assert itself as a regional power.
Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping were due to meet one-on-one and discuss Ukraine, according to the Russian president’s foreign affairs adviser.
