Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, addressing the BRICS meeting on Friday, urged the full support in reforming the United Nations Security Council as an exercise in collective faith in meaningful multilateralism.

In a meeting via video conferencing, the ministers attending the meet “exchanged views on the international situation and regional hotspots including Afghanistan and West Asia.”

The Ministry of External Affairs on Friday addressed the stand-alone meeting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) ministers of Foreign Affairs/International Relations under the Chairmanship of the Russian Federation.

The BRICS ministers exchanged views on major international and regional issues and reviewed the progress of intra-BRICS activities, reported ANI.

Jaishankar also addressed the European House – Ambrosetti Cernobbio 2020 Forum on the World after the COVID-19 pandemic – highlighting the growth of Indian medical and pharmaceutical capacities. He mentioned how Indian medical and pharmaceutical capacities created an effective response domestically while contributing to global requirements.

EAM Dr Jaishankar also shared India’s repatriation experiences and underlined the need for global cooperation as proposed during the G-20 summit.

During the course of the meeting, the BRICS ministers acknowledged that current interconnected international challenges were a powerful reminder of the imperative to strengthen cooperation between states. They also addressed the need to strengthen ties between nations through reinvigorated diplomacy and a reformed multilateral system, which would also include the United Nations, World Trade Organization, World Health Organisation, and International Monetary Fund.

The ministers participating in the meet also talked about the United Nation Security Council’s Resolution 2532, adopted this year, which demands general and immediate cessation of hostilities in all situations on its agenda with the exception of military operations against terrorist groups designated by the United Nation Security Council and called for durable humanitarian pause against the backdrop of COVID-19, reported ANI.
