Opened in Ranikhet, Uttarakhand, India’s first Forest Healing Centre was
inaugurated on March 7, 2021. Developed by Research
Wing of Uttarakhand Forest Department, the department decided to create the
centre after doing a research on the incredible effect of forests in revitalising
health and wellness.
Spread over 13 acres of land, the forest healing
Centre involves activities like tree hugging, forest walking, sky gazing,
forest meditation and more. The Chief conservator of the Centre, Sanjiv Chaturvedi,
said in a statement that tree-hugging can release happy hormones like
serotonin, oxytocin, and dopamine. He further added that countries like Iceland
have been using this activity to boost mental health levels of citizens.
The activity of forest meditation is also a key
activity in the Centre. It involves calming down the mind and body and letting
the forest’s peaceful atmosphere take over our thoughts.
The healing Centre maintains a register, that keeps a record of its visitors
and their experiences in the forest. Many shared that they felt calm and relaxed
during their visit, and loved the activities provided. The Centre urges visitors
to not carry phones and cameras, as well as avoid talking especially if they
are in groups, in order to make the most out of the peace and beauty the forest
has to offer.
