Ladakh, one
of the most mountainous regions in India, has got its first mobile digital
movie theatre. At an altitude of 11,562 feet, this is the highest theatre in
the world. The theatre was inaugurated on August 24. Organisers say the theatre
is meant to bring the cinema watching experience to remote areas. The mobile
theatre has been set up in the Paldan area of Leh in Ladakh.

The theatre
has been installed by PictureTime Digiplex. At the launch, the
critically-acclaimed short film — Sekool — was screened at the theatre.
Bollywood actor Pankaj Tripathi and Ladakh Buddhist Association President (LBA)
Thupstan Chewang were present for the inauguration of the digital mobile
theatre.

Following
the launch, Mepham Otsal, an actor from the National School of Drama, said, “It
(the theatre) offers affordable tickets and has several facilities. The seating
arrangement is also good. Being a theatre artist, it’s very good for the people
here as it will open a gate to the world of cinema,” according to news agency
ANI.

Sushil, one
of the organisers, said that four such theatres will come up in Leh. “The
initiative was taken to bring the movie experience to the remotest areas of
India and can be expanded to the rest of the country. Theatres are arranged in
a way they can be arranged at -28°C.
The first
film shown at the theatre — Sekool — is based on the Changpa nomads of Ladakh
and is directed by Stenzin Tankong. Later, Bollywood film BellBottom
starring Akshay Kumar was also screened.
Actor Pankaj
Tripathi, a guest of honour at the launch of the world’s highest altitude movie
theatre, said, “For someone like me who belongs to the film world, this comes
across as such a unique and different means of film exhibition. Having a
concept like this, that too in a gorgeous location such as Leh, is incredible,
reports Mint.
