In the opening five-day game against South Africa in Centurion on Tuesday, Mohammed Shami picked up the wicket of Kagiso Rabada for his 200th Test wicket. In his 55th Test, he reached the milestone.

Shami’s fifth wicket of the innings came from Rabada. He is the 11th Indian bowler to reach the 200-wicket mark, and the fifth fast bowler to do so.

Shami concluded with 5 for 44 as South Africa were dismissed for 197, 130 runs behind India.

He joined the ranks of Indian pacers, such as, Kapil Dev, Ishant Sharma, Zaheer Khan and Javgal Srinath.

People from the sporting world poured out their love and appreciation for Shami. 

Sports journalist, Boria Majumder, tweeted, “200 wickets with a 5 wicket haul! @MdShami11 many congratulations.”

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra wrote, “Sensational Shami. What an incredible feat to pick 200 Test wickets in just 55 games. #SAvInd”

“After a fabulous innings from Rahul on Day 1,an outstanding display of seam bowling from Shami. 5 wkts and a great way to get to 200 Test Wickets. With his fine spell,India take a commanding 130 run lead. Wishing for the batsman to capitalise & set a big target for South Africa,” VVS Laxman wrote in a tweet.

Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle wrote, “What a champion spell. #Shami. 200 wickets. Didn’t let India miss  Bumrah today. Love watching him bowl.”
