Mothers%u2019 Day is the day people recognise their mothers%u2019 immeasurable contributions and show their gratitude. It is celebrated on different dates in different parts of the world. In India, Mother%u2019s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year, which is why, this year, it is celebrated on May 9. This is the day, children usually buy gifts, throw parties or do things for their mothers to show their love and appreciation. Usually, children take up their mothers%u2019 duties and make them rest on the day.

The Mother%u2019s Day celebration goes back to the early 20th century in the United States, where it is the first Mother%u2019s Day was celebrated. In the US, a woman named Anna Reese Jarvis organized a memorial ceremony at Saint Andrew%u2019s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia to recognise and value her mother%u2019s contributions and of all the mothers.

Mothers%u2019 Day came into existence officially when former US President Woodrow Wilson signed a declaration in 1914, announcing that the second Sunday in the month of May will be a National Holiday on the account of Mothers%u2019 day. In the United Kingdom, it is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of March.
