Mulayam Singh Yadav, the founder of the Samajwadi Party, died on Monday morning at the age of 82 in Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital. The official Twitter handle of the Samajwadi Party shared a statement by Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son Akhilesh Yadav on the same. “My respected father and everyone’s Netaji is no more: Akhilesh Yadav,” read the tweet.

Mulayam Singh Yadav’s grandfather was Mevaram, a father to two sons,  Bachilal Singh and Sugar Singh. Sugar Singh had five sons: Mulayam Singh Yadav, Ratan Singh, Rajpal Singh Yadav, Abhay Ram Singh, and Shivpal Singh Yadav.

Mulayam had five brothers, the eldest of whom was Abhay Ram. His son’s name is Dharmendra Yadav. Dharmendra has served as a Member of Parliament three times. He was defeated in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Dharmendra was recently the SP candidate in the Azamgarh Lok Sabha by-election. 

Ratan Singh is Mulayam Singh’s second of five brothers. Tej Pratap Yadav, a former MP from Mainpuri, is Ratan Singh’s grandson and Ranveer Singh’s son. He is son in law of former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Mulayam Singh Yadav, a prominent member of the Lohia movement, was born on November 22, 1939. Mulayam is the third of five brothers. On October 4, 1992, he founded the Samajwadi Party. Akhilesh Yadav is the son of Mulayam Singh and Malti Devi. 

Mulayam married Sadhna Gupta for the second time. On November 24, 1999, Akhilesh Yadav married Dimple Yadav. Sadhana’s son from her previous marriage is Prateek Yadav and he married Aparna Yadav.

Dimple has also served as a Member of Parliament. She was defeated in the Kannauj elections in 2019. Aparna, Prateek’s wife, ran as an SP candidate from Lucknow Cantt in 2017. She later joined the BJP

Rajpal Singh Yadav is fourth among Mulayam’s five brothers. Anshul, Rajpal’s son, is also involved in politics. For the second time in a row, Anshul was voted unopposed as district panchayat president.

Shivpal Singh Yadav is Mulayam’s younger brother. Shivpal Singh Yadav is the one who has assisted Mulayam Singh Yadav the most in politics. 

When there was a conflict between Mulayam’s elder son Akhilesh Yadav and Shivpal Singh Yadav prior to the 2017 assembly elections, Shivpal formed his own party. Shivpal is also a member of the Jaswantnagar Legislative Assembly. Aditya Yadav, his son, is also involved in politics.

Prof. Ram Gopal Yadav is Mulayam Singh Yadav’s uncle Bacchi Lal Singh’s son. Bachilal has two children, Prof. Ramgopal and Geeta Yadav. Prof. Ramgopal is also politically active. In 2004, he resigned from the Mainpuri seat to make way for Mulayam Singh Yadav. He is now a Rajya Sabha member. Akshay Yadav, the son of Ram Gopal Yadav, was elected MP from Firozabad on the Samajwadi Party ticket in 2014 but lost in the Lok Sabha elections of 2019.
