Standup
comedian Munawar Faruqui, who is based in Indore, belongs to Junagadh, Gujarat.
He recently made headlines after he was arrested for allegedly hurting Hindu
sentiments by making questionable remarks on Hindu Gods. He also made remarks on Union Home Minister
Amit Shah during a show on January 1 in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore. However, on
Friday, he was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court after more than a
month of his arrest.

It all started when Eklavya Singh Gaud, son of BJP MLA Malini Laxman Singh Gaud and convenor of Hind Rakshak Sangathan, a
ring-wing outfit went to watch
the show. However after observing Faruqui allegedly making inappropriate jokes
on Hindu Gods, he filed a complaint against the comedian and four others after
the show.

The 30-year-old was then arrested
and charged under several sections including section 188, 34, 269 and 295 A of
Indian Penal Code, which deals with organising the event without permission, breaking
COVID-19 safety rules and deliberate
and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class.

Although, following his
release on Friday, the grounds of his arrest have been questioned by many people
including his fellow comedians including Kunal Kamra.

Faruqui, popular for his
political content and criticism of centre, often jokes about the sensitive
matter of the Indian society, including religion, NRC and Delhi riots.

The comedian previously
also landed in controversy in April 2020 after his YouTube video broke the
internet and went viral. In the video, he was seen making jokes on Hindu Gods
Rama and Sita along with 2002 Godhra massacre.
