Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Mukesh Choudhary has won the Nakur assembly constituency defeating Dr Dharam Singh Saini of the Samajwadi Party (SP) by a margin of just 315 votes.

Uttar Pradesh’s Nakur assembly constituency was won by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Dr Dharam Singh Saini in 2017. He defeated his closest rival Imran Masood of the Congress (INC) by a margin of 4057 votes.

The BJP won 312 of UP’s 403 assembly seats in 2017, earning an absolute majority and ousting the Samajwadi Party (SP). Yogi Adityanath, MP from the Gorakhpur constituency, was made the chief minister.

Nakur is one of the assembly constituencies in the Kairana Lok sabha Constituency. It became a new constituency in 1952 as a result of delimitation. It was earlier a part of the Kairana assembly constituency.

In 1974, in the first election after Nakur came into being as an assembly seat, Indian National Congress (INC)’s Yashpal Singh defeated Rasheed Masood by 9421 votes.

Of the other four assembly constituencies in Saharanpur, two were won by the BJP and one each by the Samajwadi Party and the Congress in the 2017 assembly elections. The Samajwadi Party, led by Akhilesh Yadav, won 47 assembly seats. Mayawati’s BSP was third with 19 and the Congress settled for fourth with seven seats.

In 2012, the Samajwadi Party had won 224 seats, the BSP was second, winning 80 seats, the BJP with 47 and the Congress 28.
