Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the National Emblem on the roof of the new Parliament building on Monday. 

According to the government note, the concept sketch and framework of casting the national emblem on the roof of the new parliament building went through eight stages of preparation, beginning with clay modelling, computer graphics, bronze casting, and polishing.

The 6.5m tall bronze emblem took more than nine months to cast, according to senior Central Public Works Department (CPWD) officials.

The emblem was divided into over 150 segments before being assembled on the roof.

“The work to assemble it started in April end. It took us nearly two months to complete the work. The structure weighs 9,500kg and is 4.4m in width. It has been cast at the top of the Central Foyer of the New Parliament Building. A supporting structure of steel weighing around 6,500kg has been constructed to support the Emblem,” a CWPD said according to The Hindustan Times.

The government intends spend Rs. 1,250 crore on the new parliament building. The cost increased by 29% over the budgeted amount of 977 crore. Tata Projects is building the building, which is the centrepiece of the government’s ambitious Central Vista project.

The proposed four-story building on 13 acres near Rashtrapati Bhavan was initially expected to be completed before the country’s 75th Independence Day this year. The deadline was then moved ahead to October.

The event was attended by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. During the event, the Prime Minister conversed with members of the construction crew for the grand new Parliament building.
