The Press Council of India on Tuesday sought a detailed report on the death of a local journalist during the Lakhimpur Kheri violence at the earliest from the Uttar Pradesh government, the press body said in a statement.

“Taking suo-motu cognisance on the issue, the Honourable chairman directed the Government of Uttar Pradesh through the Chief Secretary and the Director-General of Police, Uttar Pradesh to submit a report on the facts of the case at the earliest,” the statement read.

On October 3, violence broke out in Lakhimpur Kheri where a group of farmers were protesting against the visit of UP Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya’s in view of farm laws demonstration. After the incident, a video showing a SUV, allegedly driven by Union minister of state Ajay Kumar Mishra Teni’s son Ashish Mishra, hit the protesting farmers at Tikunia village in the district, prompting an angry crowd to burn two vehicles and widen their agitation.    

During the violence, Raman Kashyap, a 30-year-old local journalist was also killed while covering the farmers’ protests for Sadhana TV. He was among eight people, including four farmers who have killed the violence on Sunday.

Several media reports allege that Kashyap was killed after getting crushed under the car. While his colleagues from the news outlet he worked for claim that he was beaten to death by the protesters while shooting videos of the incident.

Farmers have alleged that the car that ran over farmers was driven by the minister’s son Ashish Mishra.

“Raman has a boy and a girl. We should be given ₹ 50 lakh compensation and my daughter-in-law should be given a government job,” NDTV quoted Ram Dulari said
