The Congress, which is trying to douse the fire in its Punjab unit ahead of the assembly elections scheduled early next year, has reportedly finalised a formula to placate warring leaders Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Speaking to the press, party’s in-charge of the state Harish Rawat said that the two leaders will work together and a formula had been worked out. “Captain (Amarinder Singh) and Sidhu (Navjot Singh) will work together… A formula has been made around this, we have also made formula for the working presidents,” reports ANI.

This comes on the day some media reports suggested that Sidhu may take over as Congress state unit chief. According to a report in ndtv.com, Singh will also overhaul his Council of Ministers, with Charanjit Channi and Gurpreet Kangar among those likely to be sacked.

Singh and Sidhu have almost been at each other’s throats for the past many months with their difference spilling over into public domain. The two have engaged in several public spats, attacking each other over issues such as the alleged delay in the completion of a probe into the 2015 desecration of Sikh texts and the subsequent police firing on protesters, power tariff and farm protests.

The Congress top leadership has been trying to broker peace but with little luck so far. Going by the media reports, no headway has been  made so far in several rounds of talks. But with months to go for state assembly elections, the Congress is desperately trying to minimise damage by brokering  some kind of a peace pact between the warring leaders.

Earlier this week, Rawat had hinted at an agreement being reached in the state. Congress will get “good news” in the next three to four days, Rawat said after meeting Rahul Gandhi. It was earlier reported that Sonia Gandhi had instructed Singh “to take Sidhu into confidence.” Sidhu’s earlier reported demands of deputy CM post and PCC chief post were stonewalled by Singh.
