Punjab singer and Congress leader Sidhu Moose Wala was shot dead in a village in Punjab’s Mansa district on Sunday. The shooting took place a day after Punjab Police ordered the withdrawal of security of 424 people, including him. 

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Mansa) Gobinder Singh told PTI that several bullets hit the 28-year-old singer, who was in his jeep at village Jawahar Ke when he was attacked by unidentified assailants. He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. According to reports, two other people sustained injuries in the shooting but there was no word on their condition.

Born on June 17, 1993, in Mansa, Punjab, Moose Waala started his career by writing the song “License”.  He shot to fame after his debut music album was ranked 66th on the Billboard Canadian albums chart. In 2021, Guardian named him among the ’50 new artists for 2020’. 

Moose Waala joined the Congress party in December last year and was the party’s candidate from Mansa in Punjab’s assembly elections this year. He was defeated by Aam Aadmi Party’s Dr Vijay Singla with a margin of 63,323 votes.

Reacting to the singer’s death, Congress said, “The murder of Shri Sidhu Moose Wala, Congress candidate from Punjab & a talented musician, has come as a terrible shock to the Congress party & the entire nation.”

“Our deepest condolences to his family, fans & friends. We stand united & undeterred, at this time of extreme grief.”

Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said he was “shocked beyond belief and expression”.

”He was showered with bullets in Mansa just 2 days after @BhagwantMann govt withdrew his security. @AAPPunjab govt has lost moral authority. It must be DISMISSED (sic),” said Warring in a tweet.
