Rebel Sachin Pilot met top Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Delhi today, emerging to signal that the current crisis he scripted in the Rajasthan Congress is now over.

“Yes we met and discussed all issues and I have been assured that all my concerns will be addressed,” Sachin Pilot told Opoyi after the meeting, adding that he has pressed for no deadlines for his demands to be met. “Everything will happen in due process,” added the 42-year-old Pilot.

Sachin Pilot, who was Rajasthan’s deputy Chief Minister, had last month rebelled against his boss, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who he wanted removed. An extended sulk resulted in the prominent young leader losing his job in the state government and as the party’s Rajasthan chief.

The fine print of the armistice, sources said, includes advise for Pilot that he should not insist on a public commitment that the party will make him Rajasthan chief minister at a later date. All MLAs in Team Sachin will demonstrate support for the Gehlot government when the state Assembly meets from August 14. Gehlot will thus win a confidence vote in the assembly with ease.

At the meeting with the Gandhis today, a Congress leader said, Pilot won the assurance that the top leadership has made note of “Gehlot’s behaviour,” and that “the chief minister is not the party.”

Sources close to CM Gehlot said the tame end to the drama was expected as Pilot “just didn’t have the numbers.” Also, that any support that Pilot expected from the BJP was not forthcoming as the party’s top leader in the state and former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia was totally unenthusiastic in siding with Sachin to bring down the Gehlot government.

What the weeks long standoff did bring was embarrassment for the Congress and the two sides were said to be looking for a ‘breakthrough’ after many accusations and counter-accusations.

Sachin Pilot had twice before today met Priyanka Gandhi, who led the effort to defuse the situation, working with senior Congress leaders like Ahmed Patel and KC Venugopal, apart from brother and former Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

Ashok Gehlot has accused Pilot of plotting a coup to topple his government. Pilot categorically denied the charges, and said that he was against “mismanagement” in the Rajasthan government.

Rajasthan has 200 seats in its Assembly. The Congress uprooted the BJP in 2018 to win 106 seats in the state assembly. The Gehlot camp has been claiming that it has the support of 107 legislators, including the 6 BSP MLAs who switched to the Congress back in 2019. A party has majority in Rajasthan at 101 seats.

Team Pilot had insisted that it has on it at least 19 Congress MLAs.

On Sunday, the Rajasthan CM had asked the party legislators to show their unity on the floor of the House. “We are all democracy warriors. We are going to win this war and also win the (assembly) election after three-and-a-half years,” Gehlot said while addressing a Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting at a resort in Jaisalmer.
