On the 110th
birth anniversary of Mother Teresa, a homage prayer was offered in front of Mother
Teresa’s tomb at The Mother House Of the Missionaries Of Charity in Kolkata on
Wednesday, tweeted news agency ANI.

Special prayers were
also offered in Siliguri’s Pradhan Nagar to commemorate the birth anniversary
of one of the most inspiring people the world has seen.

Mother Teresa  came to India in 1929 and after teaching for
a few years at St Teresa’s School in Darjeeling, she took her first religious vows
in 1931.

During her time in
India, she was deeply affected by suffering and poverty in India and in 1948 she received permission
from her superiors to leave the school and work amongst the poor in the slums
of Calcutta.

In 1950, she started her own order, “The Missionaries of Charity” after
receiving nod from the Holy See. The primary task of the society was to care
for those persons nobody wanted to look after. Fifteen years later, the society
became an International Religious Family.

In 1979, Mother Teresa was offered the Noble Peace Prize but
she refused to accept it and instead asked to donate the prize money which amounted
to USD 192,000 for helping the poor people in India.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also tweeted to
pay tribute to Mother Teresa on her birth anniversary, “Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is
the beginning of love.” Fondly remembering Mother Teresa (Saint Teresa of
Calcutta) on her birth anniversary, the tweet said.
