If you are looking for style inspiration this festive season, how about taking a cue from real-world- women and young girls who ensured that the prized possessions from their mother’s closet do not die a slow death inside the closet. They not only took them out but gave a makeover too with their twist.
Priyanka, a mother of two daughters and a business head with Salt Brand Solutions, shares how she used one of her mother’s sarees to make costumes for her twin daughters.
“Eight years into marriage and I precisely have 4 saris in my wardrobe and when festivals come knocking I end up digging into Mom’s wardrobe to mix n match a traditional attire of sort. My mom, always preferred sari as her office, festive or usual out of home attire. Me and my sister, started playing a key role in her wardrobe choices since our teen days, as we would steal her saris later for school/college functions,” she said.
“This simple yet elegant silk saree in soothing pink with pearl work is what she wore at my elder sister’s wedding. I always had my eyes on this particular sari. So last year, while I was hunting for nice traditional wear for my twin daughters – Anvika & Ananya, I chanced upon this sari – and mumma gave it away happily for her grandkids.
“My Bua, Charu, known for her creativity in fashion designing, helped me turn this beautiful saree into a traditional yet trendy polka-choli. Here are my posers, flaunting their ‘Chandni’ moment,” she added.
Journalist and Youtuber Maria D’ Costa also raided a closet but not that of her mother but of her daughter Mckayla Da Costa, 17.
“Being born after three brothers, I missed having a sister…to exchange clothes and discuss fashion. So when I gave birth to two daughters, my joy knew no bounds. And when the girls reached their teens, I realised there were many additional benefits. Being a mom, you could raid their wardrobe anytime, which I do very often,” she told Opoyi.
“I would wear my mom’s sarees. I have stitched blouses with the latest designs and my friends find it difficult to believe they are recycled sarees. But wearing your mom’s sarees is not the same as wearing your daughter’s outfits. The daughter’s outfits are simple yet trendy and never fails to stand out in the crowd,” added Maria.
Lastly Pune based Doctor Sonal H. Shah and her daughter Mansi H. Shah, a software developer, also shares the same taste when it comes to dressing up.
“I took my mother’s old costume which is a beautiful black outfit and when I shared this dress with mumma, I felt amazing. It felt as if I have grown up suddenly to fit into her shoes! I have always seen my mom as an idol, so selfless, so vibrant, and such an amazingly astonishing aura. I’m always at peace whenever I talk to her, it’s almost like having a lifelong best friend with me,” she says.
Mansi also says that this outfit is also going to be one of her festive looks and she will accessorize the look with nice earrings and a beautiful clutch.
So what are you waiting for? Steal the wardrobe of your mother, daughter, and be a style diva.
