Somendu Adhikari, brother of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, has accused Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers of attacking him and beating his driver in Contai town of West Bengal’s East Midnapur district. He told ANI that his car was targeted and his driver thrashed. Earlier in the day, when polling for phase 1 West Bengal assembly started, he alleged that TMC workers were influencing voters and resorting to poll rigging, according to ANI.

According to ANI, Dibyendu Adhikari, who is also Suvendu Adhikari’s brother, told the police observer about the whole incident. “When my brother was inside the car, some TMC workers vandalised the car then thrashed him,” he said.

Suvendu Adhikari, a former TMC leader and aide of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, left the state ruling party and joined BJP in December. He is contesting against the Banerjee from the Nandigram constituency. The constituency is important for both TMC and the BJP because of its history. A farmland agitation in Nandigram, 14 years ago, uprooted the grand old Left Front government and helped Trinamool Congress-led by Mamata Banerjee to win the state assembly elections in 2011.
