India archer Pravin Jadhav lost to World No 1 Brady Ellison of the United States of America in the men’s 1/16 Eliminations at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday. Owing to this loss, he was knocked out of the competition.
Pravin, after stunning World No 2 in his previous round, could not get the momentum he was looking for and failed to give a repeat performance. The strong gusts of winds caused a problem for both the archers but it was Ellison, who proved why he is the World No 1.
In set 1, the Indian shot 9, 8, and 10 to get a total accumulated socre of 27. However, Ellison shot 9, 10, 9 to get 29 points and take a 2-0 lead in the five-set encounter.
In set 2, after shooting 10 and 9, Pravin failed to capitalise and hit a mere 7 to get a total score of 26. Ellison, who shot 8, 10 and 9, was lucky enough to maintain a lead as he eked out a 27-26 win to take a 4-0 lead in the encounter.
In set 3, Pravin could only manage to hit 8, 8, 7 and get a score of 23. This score meant he was done and out, and waited for Ellison to complete his shot. The latter shot 8 and followed it up with two 9s to get a total score of 26.
While Pravin had cast the World No 2 Galsan Bazarzhapov to a 6-0 defeat in the previous round, he faced the same result in 1/6 Eliminations at the hands of the World No 1.
Jadhav, who was the best Indian with a 31st place in the ranking round, had raised expectations for the misfiring Indian archers as he dropped just one point to win the first set en route to a stunning 6-0 win against Bazarzhapov under windy conditions at the Yumenoshima Park.
Earlier, another Indian in the fray Tarundeep Rai, too, made a second-round exit, going down to Itay Shanny of Israel in a tight shoot-off finish for a heartbreaking exit in his swansong Olympics.
