Olympic gymnastics champion Mary Lou Retton is currently receiving critical care at a hospital in Texas after being diagnosed with pneumonia.

McKenna Kelley, Retton’s daughter, gave an update on her mother’s health on Tuesday via an Instagram post. Kelley stated that Retton, who is 55 years old and well-known for being the first American woman to win the Olympic all-around title, is currently in critical condition and is having difficulty breathing independently.

Retton doesn’t have health insurance, so Kelley started a fundraising campaign to help pay her medical bills.

At the age of sixteen, Retton made Olympic history for the United States by grabbing the gold medal in the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

Former University of Texas quarterback Shannon Kelley is a successful real estate entrepreneur who met Mary Lou Retton in 1989 and married the following year. They have four daughters together: Emma, McKenna, Skyla, and Shayla.

In addition to playing quarterback for the University of Texas Longhorns from 1981 to 1983, Kelley graduated with a degree in business administration in 1984. He entered the professional football ranks after graduating from college, playing with the Houston Gamblers of the United States Football League (USFL).

After his football career came to an end, Kelley turned his attention to real estate development. He is Houston Baptist University’s Vice President of Development at the moment.

Despite their 27-year marriage ending in divorce in 2018, Kelley and Retton remain friendly and co-parent their four daughters.

In addition to his real estate activities, Kelley serves on the Mary Lou Retton Foundation board, a charity that helps kids with disabilities.
