A team of Trinamool Congress leaders tried to meet Hathras gangrape victim’s family on Friday, however, they were stopped by the police a short distance from the village. Police had put up barricades some 1.5 km from the victim’s home. The face-off between the cops and Trinamool leaders saw party leader Derek O’Brien being pushed to the ground.

“He (Derek O’Brien) was pushed to the ground, maybe he is injured too. He was attacked. How can they do it?,” TMC leader Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar told news agency ANI.

“We were going to meet her family but there were not allowing us. When we insisted, the women Police personnel pulled at our blouses and lathi-charged at our MP Pratima Mondal. She fell down. The male Police officers touched her. This is shameful,” Trinamool leader Mamata Thakur added.

Friday’s police action against Trinamool leaders was similar to what happened on Thursday when Congress leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi tried to march towards Hathras after their convoy was stopped at the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida.

Rahul Gandhi was pushed to the ground during the commotion as the police tried to stop him and hundreds of Congress workers. The Gandhis were later arrested for a brief period.

Later in the day, an FIR was lodged against the Congress leaders and 200 other party workers for violating the the Epidemic Diseases Act.
