Mumbai clinched the Vijay Hazare Trophy with a century from wicketkeeper-batsman Aditya Tare and a fifty from opener Prithvi Shaw helping secure a six-wicket win over Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.

Chasing the 312-run target set by Uttar Pradesh at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, Mumbai came flying off the blocks, scoring 100 runs in 10.3 overs with the loss of a wicket. Notably, Uttar Pradesh had accumulated just 29 runs at the same point in their innings.

Opener Prithvi Shaw continued his fiery form in the final, scoring 73 runs off 39 balls. The 21-year-old is the top scorer of the tournament with 754 runs in seven innings before the final, including four centuries.

Shaw was unable to get a fifth ton, however, as Uttar Pradesh’s strategy to use short, slower balls paid dividends. A top-edge shot saw him being caught near the boundary line, with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and wicketkeeper-batsman Aditya Tare continuing the Mumbai innings.

They suffered a second blow when Jaiswal was dismissed by Uttar Pradesh left-arm spinner Shivam Sharma for 29.

However, Tare scored an unbeaten 118 from 107 deliveries and stitched crucial partnerships with Shams Mulani (36 from 43) and Shivam Dube (42 from 28) to secure the win.

Uttar Pradesh scored a total of 312/4, largely due to a stellar 158-run innings from Madhav Kaushik, assisted by supporting scores of Samarth Singh (55), and Akshdeep Nath (55).

Their scoring picked up after a seemingly slow start, as openers Kaushik and Singh both scored half centuries, propelling the innings forward. Singh was dismissed by Prashad Solanki after scoring 55 runs.

Captain Karan Sharma, however, had a visibly disappointing day, as he left for a duck, playing just one ball.

Priyam Garg aided Kaushik, with 19 runs to his name after 31 overs.
