Hanuman Chalisa, a Hindu devotional hymn, is praise of Hanuman authored by Tulsidas in the Awadhi language. Tulsidas is best known text apart from the Ramcharitmanas. The word “chalisa” is derived from “chalis”, which means the number forty in Hindi, as the Hanuman Chalisa has 40 verses (excluding the couplets at the beginning and at the end).
Hanuman, a devotee of Lord Ram, is one of the central characters of Hindu epic, the Ramayan. According to the Shaivite tradition, Hanuman is also an incarnation of God Shiva. The qualities of bhagwan Hanuman were his strength, courage, wisdom, celibacy, devotion to Lord Rama.
Tulsidas, a Hindu poet-saint, was a reformer and philosopher known for his devotion for Lord Ram. He lived in Varanasi until his death and the Tulsi Ghat in Varanasi is named after him.
He founded the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple dedicated to Hanuman in Varanasi, believed to stand at the place where he had the sight of Hanuman.
