Rajesh Verma on Saturday made his first appearance as President Droupadi Murmu’s Secretary. The Odisha cadre IAS officer was present at CJI UU Lalit’s swearing ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Along with President Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former president Ram Nath Kovind, former vice president M Venkaiah Naidu and Union ministers, including Kiren Rijiju, were present at the ceremony.

Who is Rajesh Verma?

Rajesh Verma was appointed as the Secretary to President earlier this month. He has served as the Principal Secretary to Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Principal Secretary of Energy Department, Government of Odisha. He is 58 years old.

Verma was given the additional charge of the Financial Services Secretary in January, 2022. He also served as the MCA Secretary, starting April 2020. In the same year, he was also appointed as the chairman of the Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority (IEPFA).

He took over from Kapil Dev Tripathi, a 1980-batch retired IAS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre.

“The Competent Authority has approved assignment of additional charge of the post of Secretary, Department of Financial Services to Shri Rajesh Verma, lAS (OR:1987), Secretary, Ministry of Corporate Affairs with immediate effect and till the appointment of a regular incumbent or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” Verma’s appointment order read.

After being sworn in, Justice Lalit sought the blessings of his family elders by touching their feet, including that of his 90-year-old father and former high court judge Umesh Ranganath Lalit.

As the CJI, Justice Lalit will have a tenure of 74 days and would demit office on November 8 on attaining the age of 65 years.
