Sushil Chandra, the 24th Chief Election Commissioner of India took charge on April 13, a day after his predecessor Sunil Arora demitted office.

Chandra, an IIT graduate and 1980 batch Indian Revenue Service officer, will be in office till May 14, 2022. During this one year, he is expected to oversee assembly elections in key states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur.

Earlier, during his over two year term as an Election Commissioner, Chandra coordinated assembly elections of more than 10 states. He is also an ex-officio member of the Delimitation Commission since February 18, 2020 looking after the process in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Chandra has eraler served in the Income Tax Department for nearly 39 years. He was later appointed the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman on November 1, 2016. He was the Director and then Director General of Investigation, Mumbai and Gujarat. He later assumed the post of Chairman of this apex body.

Chandra, 63, joined the poll panel as an election commissioner in 2019, quitting his post at the CBDT.  Chandra is the second IRS officer to join the EC and become CEC, T S Krishnamurthy being the first. Krishnamurthy had joined the poll panel and went on to become the chief election commissioner in 2004
