Ex-journalist and Communist Party of India Marxist CPI(M) leader Veena George is the new health minister of Kerala. She took the oath of office on Thursday replacing KK Shailaja also known as Shailaja teacher in the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan led cabinet.

Born in Thiruvananthapuram on August 3, 1976, the 44-year-old leader was the first female journalist to lead a Malayalam TV channel. She became the first woman Executive Editor to head a media organisation in Kerala at TV New.

She completed her education MSc (Physics) from Kerala University and was one of the toppers in her course.

As a journalist, she worked for 16 years with various regional as well as national media outlets like Kairali TV Manorama News, India vision, Reporter TV and TV New. She also tried her hands-on teaching before starting her journalism career with Kairali TV.

A mother of two, George is married to George Joseph, a higher secondary school teacher, and is daughter of PE Kuriakose, who was an advocate.
