The United States Marine Corps identified the four Americans who died during a NATO exercise in Norway on Friday night. The military training exercise was being carried out in a Norwegian town in the Arctic Circle.

The men, all assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 261, Marine Aircraft Group 26, 2d Marine Aircraft Wing stationed on Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina, were identified as:

– Captain Matthew J. Tomkiewicz was a resident of Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was aged 27.

– Captain Ross A. Reynolds was a resident of Leominster, Massachusetts. He was aged 27.

-Gunnery Sergeant James W. Speedy was a resident of Cambridge, Ohio. He was aged 30.

-Corporal Jacob M. Moore was a resident of Catlettsburg, Kentucky. He was 24 years old.

The United States Marine Corps spokesperson said in a statement on Sunday night that the remains of the fallen members of armed forces were removed from the crash site and were in the process of being returned home.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation, but Norwegian police reported bad weather in the area.

Officials in Norway said the MV-22B Osprey crashed in Graetaedalen in Beiarn, south of Bodoe. It reportedly “had a crew of four and was out on a training mission in Nordland County” in northern Norway, the country’s armed forces said in a statement, according to reports from Associated Press.

A Norwegian rescue helicopter spotted the crash site late Friday and local Red Cross crews were assigned to assist police on the ground, Norwegian media said.

Norwegian newspaper VG said Red Cross members drove close to the crash site with scooters and marked the trail with GPS for police in what they described as extremely difficult weather conditions early Saturday.
