Marvel’s new superhero movie ‘Black Widow‘ made an estimated $80 million in North America in this three-day weekend, reports AFP quoting industry watcher Exhibitor Relations. The Scarlett Johansson-starrer also made $78 internationally and an additional $60 million as a premium stream on Disney Plus. The movie ended up making a global toal of $218 on its first weekend, a pandemic-era record.
Hollywood Reporter said that it was ‘unprecedented’ for a studio to give out streaming revenue on the opening weekend itself. ‘Black Widow’ is yet to open in China.

In the second place was ‘F9: The Fast Saga’, the action thriller by Universal Studios. F9 garnered just $10.9 million this weekend. The film had opened strong and notched up a COVID-era record with a $70 million opening, a record that ‘Black Widow’ beat. The film, which is the ninth movie in the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise, has Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez and John Cena in lead roles.
Universal also claimed the next two spots in the list. In third was its animated sequel ‘The Boss Baby: Family Business,’ at $8.7 million. The yarn about a cannily can-do ‘boss baby’ features the voices of Alec Baldwin, Eva Longoria, Jeff Goldblum and Lisa Kudrow.
The fourth spot was claimed by horror film ‘The Forever Purge’, which raked in $6.7 million. This latest in the Purge series is again set in a dystopian near-future where all crime, even murder, is made legal one day a year. Ana de la Reguera and Tenoch Huerta star.

And in fifth was Paramount’s ‘A Quiet Place: Part II,’ at $3 million, pushing its domestic total near $150 million in its seventh week. John Krasinski directed the horror flic; his wife Emily Blunt stars.
This was also the first weekend since COVID-19 struck that the US box office crossed the $100 million mark. The domestic box office collections stood at $116.8 million, 20% higher than last weekend.
