Diwali is almost here and as a ritual, all homes in the country get down to clean and declutter. Though Diwali this will be different in many aspects, the one constant will be this cleaning ritual.

Indians have difficulty in decluttering because we have a concept of “this may come handy sometime” though that time comes very very rarely. Even if it does, we don’t get what we are looking for because of all the other things saved under that category.

That is our main source of clutter. Even if that thing may come in handy, keep a few of those and throw the others away. There is no need to keep a bagful of polythene bags or cloth bags. Use that space for something else, maybe your favorite book.

Here are a few other tips to help ease the process of decluttering your home this Diwali:

  1. Collect all items of one category. Ask the question ‘does it spark joy’. Store items that spark joy.
  2. Store things vertically instead of piling them one on top of the other. This will make everything more accessible and also visible.
  3. Categorise as much as possible and store items of one kind of category together.
  4. Don’t scatter items of same category in the house, that way you will never know the volume of how much you own.
