The Moab City Police Department is being sued for wrongful death by Gabby Petito’s family, who claims that in the weeks prior to her death, officers had the opportunity to save her life.

According to legal documents acquired by TMZ, Moab PD failed to protect Gabby when they looked into the alleged domestic violence incident about two weeks before Brian Laundrie killed her.

Who was Gabby Petito?

An American woman named Gabby Petito was killed by her fiance, Brian Laundrie, in August 2021 as they were embarking on a cross-country van trip. The journey started on July 2, 2021, and Petito was supposed to be gone for four months; however, he vanished in late August.

Due to the Petito couple’s social media activity, police body camera footage, 9-1-1 emergency dispatch call recordings, and eyewitness testimony, the story received widespread media attention.

Gabby Petito grew up in Long Island’s southern half of New York. She attended Bayport-Blue Point High School, graduating in 2017. She traveled all around the globe during her high school years.  In March 2019, she started dating Laundrie and the two started travelling together. The couple moved in together two years ago in North Port, Florida, and got engaged in July 2020.

They started their drive in July from New York‘s Long Island with an intent to reach Oregon by Halloween. Petito, however, dissapeared after her last known contact with family in late August. On September 1, Laundrie drove their van back to Florida, alone. Petito’s family filed a missing persons report on Saturday and following a probe, Laundrie was named the “person of interest” in her case.

On Thursday, Moab Police Department released a body camera footage that showed an officer pulling over their van on Aug. 12 after it was seen speeding and hitting a curb. The video shows the visibly upset woman telling the officer that she and Laundrie were “just been fighting this morning.” She goes on to say that she suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder that affects her behavior.

Meanwhile, Laundrie says on the video they got into a minor scuffle after he climbed into the van with dirty feet. As of Thursday afternoon, several teams, including the FBI, were searching for the missing woman.
