The Indian cricket team, on Sunday, put up a disciplined performance to outclass the Sri Lankan cricket team by seven wickets in the first of a three-match One-Day International (ODI) series at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Sri Lanka, after winning the toss, was powered by a Chamika Karunaratne-cameo to post a competitive 262/9.
In reply, India overhauled the target in 36.4 overs.
After a slow start and an innings, Sri Lankan lower-order batsman Chamika Karunaratne hit a quickfire 43 and stitched together a key 18-ball stand of 40 for the 9th wicket with Dushmantha Chameera, who got run out for 13 on the final ball of the Lankan innings.
In reply, the Indian side was off to a flier, courtesy of a 58-run stand between Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan.
Prithvi Shaw continued his form from the Indian Premier League (IPL) and took the bowling apart in the first few overs, giving the Indian side a solid base for the 263-run chase.
He was struck on the helmet as he was reaching his ODI fifty and was attended to by the medical personnel that resulted in a break. Soon after the break, the Indian opener departed for 43.
However, ODI debutant Ishan Kishan took the onus on him and started blasting the bowlers from ball one. Sri Lanka were never in the game as the Indian side took them apart, blasting them all over the park.
Kishan hit a 33-ball fifty and was later dismissed on 59 as he tried to up the ante. Before this, he had also scored a 50 on his T20I fifty.
Before getting dismissed, he strung together an 85-run partnership with Dhawan, who played second fiddle to the Mumbai-based batsman.
After Kishan departed, Dhawan took the onus on him and motored the Indian innings forward. He soon got his ODI fifty and then remained unbeaten on 85. During his stay in the middle, he hit six boundaries and one run.
During the end of the innings, he was complemented by Suryakumar Yadav, who scored a whirlwind 20-ball 31 run.
Earlier, Sri Lanka were off to a brisk start after they elected to bat. Dasun Shanaka, who was appointed captain after regular skipper Kusal Perera was out due to injury, top-scored with 39 as he put on a partnership of 49 for the fifth wicket with Charith Asalanka, who scored 38.
But Indian bowlers kept chipping away at the wickets as the Indian spin duo Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal shared four wickets between them.
