Japan have defeated Spain to qualify for the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2022 as Group E toppers. Their win has also managed to knock Germany out of the tournament despite defeating Costa Rica with a 4-2 scoreline.

After Argentina were defeated by Saudi Arabia in their first Group C match of the tournament, the video of a Saudi fan mocking Lionel Messi by looking around for him in a comical way had gone viral. How a Japanese fan has taken a similar approach with Spanish striker Alvaro Morata. He is seen looking around for Morata, who, however, did manage to score the only goal for Spain. This edition of the FIFA World Cup has been witness to a number of upsets, starting with Saudi Arabia’s win against an Argentina side that went into the World Cup with a 36-games unbeaten streak. Japan’s win over Germany followed. Costa Rica were leading against Germany thanks to an own goal by Manuel Neuer in the 70th minute.

However, Germany did manage to salvage the situation with goals from Kai Havertz in the 73rd and the 85th minutes, followed by another strike by Niclas Fullkrug in the 89th minute that saw them win with a scoreline of 2-4. However, this was not enough to make the four-time World Cup champions qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament.

Japan have qualified for the round of 16 in 2002, 2010, 2018, and 2022. The current edition is the first time they have managed to reach the knockout rounds on two successive occasions. In the 2018 World Cup, Japan defeated Colombia in the group stage, becoming the first-ever Asian team to beat a South American side in the tournament.
