Real Madrid beat Liverpool 1-0 in Paris, winning their fourteenth European title and giving coach Carlo Ancelotti a personal record of four Champions League final wins.

Speaking after the match, the Italian said, “I am a record man”, adding, “I had luck to come here last year and have a fantastic season. A fantastic club, a really good squad with a lot of quality and mental character”, BT Sport reported.

Ancelotti moved from Everton to Los Blancos last summer and praised the current La Liga and Champions League winners for their ‘mental quality’ and ‘character’.

The 62-year-old continued, “The season was top”, adding, “I think we passed through really difficult games. The supporters helped us a lot in the last game. They helped us tonight. We’re happy and they’re happy.”

Madrid faced some trouble with Liverpool, who looked threatening in the first half with five shots on target. However, the Spanish giants had their Belgian stopper, Thibaut Courtois, to save the day and keep the ball out of the net. Speaking of the 30-year-old Belgian’s nine saves, Ancelotti gushed, “Wow. Unbelievable”, adding, “I can’t believe it.”

He had a similar reaction to the team’s victory, gained by Vinicius Jr’s lone goal in the 59th minute. “I can’t believe it”, the Italian said, adding “We had a fantastic season. We did really well. It was a difficult game and we suffered a lot, more so in the first half. In the end I think we deserved to win this competition.”

He concluded, “We’re really happy. What can I say? I can’t say more.”

Real Madrid and Liverpool have now faced each other in three Champions League finals, which is the most for any two clubs in the history of the competition. Head to head, Liverpool has only come out ahead on one occasion, in 1981. Madrid had the upper hand in both the 2018 final in Kyiv and the current 2022 fixture.
