Jofra Archer was once asked, in an interview, if he considers himself to be the leader of the England bowling attack. His reply was “With the England team, I don’t, but I do when I am playing for the Rajasthan Royals side.” But Archer won’t be available in the first half of IPL 2021 due to an injury.
In Archer’s absence, the onus will be on Chris Morris to justify his Rs 16.25 crore price tag. And the South African has the talent and capability to fill Archer’s big shoes.
The 33-year old has claimed 80 wickets and scored 551 runs in 70 IPL games. The Royals may have broken the bank on Morris hoping that he would partner Archer in the death overs. But now Chris Morris will have added responsibility on his shoulders.
In the last few years, Morris has significantly improved his bowling skills. And the numbers speak for themselves. In IPL 2018, Morris has an economy rate of 10.3 and was picking a wicket every 28 balls.
In IPL 2020, playing for the RCB, Morris ended with an economy rate of 6.6 and brought his strike rate down to 17.
Add to this, his ability to tonk the ball out of the stadium – the opposition would not make the folly of taking him lightly.
After the auction, Morris had said that the price ‘blew his mind’. But with the skills he possesses, he can blow away any opposition.
