Cleveland Cavaliers‘ Kevin Love, who represented the US in the 2012 London Olympics, will miss the Tokyo Olympics with a right calf injury, according to US media reports on Friday.

Love spent the past 11 days with the American basketball squad. He missed a part of the 2020-21 NBA campaign with the injury.

The 32-year-old old’s absence leaves two holes to fill in a USA squad lacking both after Washington guard Bradley Beal was ruled out for Tokyo on Thursday after being placed into COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

“I am incredibly disappointed to not be heading to Tokyo with Team USA, but you need to be at absolute peak performance to compete at the Olympic level and I am just not there yet,” Love said in a statement to ESPN.

Team USA will begin their Olympic campaign on July 25 against France.

Love and Beal will be replaced by Denver Nuggets center JaVale McGee and San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson.

McGee, a three-time NBA champion, was among the finalists for a spot on the Olympic squad. Johnson, who plays for US coach Gregg Popovich in the Spurs squad, has played for the USA select squad that has served as practice opponents and roster support for the Americans.

Three members of the US Olympic team — Milwaukee’s Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday and Phoenix’s Devin Booker — are still playing in the NBA Finals.
