Indian boxer Mohammed Hussamuddin had to stay content with the bronze medal when he was beaten by Joseph Commey in the semifinals of the men’s 57kg category (featherweight) in the in the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Saturday. The medal also means that the Indian boxing contingent has now won its second medal at the ongoing edition of the Commonwealth Games, after Jaismine Lamboria, who clinched another bronze in the women’s 60kg category.
The bronze medal helped India’s medal tally to 38, including 12 gold medals. The country currently sits at the fifth position on the list, behind Australia, England, Canada and New Zealand. However, India is only four medals short of equalling New Zealand’s current tally of 42 medals, however, they still need five more gold medals to leapfrog them in the standings.

Mohammed Hussamuddin began his Commonwealth Games 2022 campaign brightly, defeating Amzolele Dyeyi 5-0 in the round of 32 and qualified for the round of 16. He continued his streak by beating Bangladeshi boxer MD Salim Hossain in the round of 16 without dropping a single point (5-0). He continued his medal bid with another victory over Namibia’s Tryagain Morning Ndevelo with a 4-1 victory in the quarterfinal.
However, he could not replicate his earlier performance in the semifinals, when Ghanian boxer Joseph Commey beat him 4-1 to advance to the final. This also meant that the Indian won the bronze medal, becoming the second Indian boxer to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

It is also the second Commonwealth Games medal for the Indian boxer, who had won a bronze medal in the previous edition in 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia.
However, the Indian boxing contingent is still in contention to win more medals as Amit Panghal, Rohit Tokas, Sagar Ahlawat, Nikhat Zareen and Nitu Ghanghas are still undefeated in their respective categories. If things go as per plans, the country will manage to win several medals in the discipline, even the elusive gold medal.
