Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai shared about her journey at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. In her speech, she emphasized on the importance of education.

The 25-year-old came on stage after a cartoon show demonstrating the Pakistani activist’s early struggle was shown on the TV screens. After the show, Yousafzai – now settled in Birmingham – welcomed everyone to the big night.

“Tonight teams from 72 countries and territories join the people of Birmingham to celebrate friendship across borders. The young athletes who will compete over the next two weeks represent millions of girls and boys across the commonwealth. Our shared hope for the future, a future where every child can go to school, where women can fully participate in society, where families can live in peace and in dignity. Over the next few weeks as we watch incredible athletes of the Commonwealth Games remember every child deserves the chance to reach her full potential and pursue her wildest dreams. It is now my honour to say, welcome to Birmingham!” she said.

Meanwhile, Britain’s Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, arrived for the Commonwealth Games at the Alexander stadium in Birmingham. The first in line to the British throne represented the Crown at the games.

Prince Charles received a painting from David Hurley, Governor-General of Australia, and his wife Linda as they attend the games.

This year’s games will see all 6,500 sportspersons and team officials from 72 nations and territories will gather trying hard to win medals for their countries at the 22nd edition. The CWG is the second biggest multi-discipline sports extravaganza after the Olympics
