West Ham announced the death of joint-chairman David Gold at the age of 86. Following a brief illness, Gold passed away on Wednesday with his family by his side, according to a statement posted on the club’s official website.

Included in the club statement are comments from joint-chairman David Sullivan, who said: “On behalf of everyone at the football club, it is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that we mourn the passing of our colleague and friend, David Gold.”

Net Worth

Gold had been regarded as a respected businessman. The Sunday Times Rich List estimated Gold and his family to be worth $555 million in 2020.

Career 

The parent business of the retailer Ann Summers and the lingerie chain Knickerbox, Gold Group International (GGI), was owned by Gold. Up until he purchased Ralph’s portion in 2008, Gold and his brother Ralph shared ownership of GGI. Before selling it for $5.3 million in 2006, Gold was the owner of the corporate air service Gold Air International.

Gold served as Birmingham City FC’s previous chairman. Gold was quoted as indicating he was thinking about resigning as Birmingham City’s co-board chairman after the team was demoted once more to the Championship in May 2008. In 2009, he sold his Birmingham City shares. Gold paid $5,89,429 to purchase the second FA Cup trophy at auction in May 2005, claiming he did it to keep foreign purchasers away.

Gold and David Sullivan purchased a 50% stake in West Ham United in January 2010, giving them complete administrative and financial authority over the team.  They were appointed joint chairmen. At a cost of $9.6 million, they each upped their ownership stake in the club to 30% in May 2010.

Wife & Family

Gold married Beryl Hunt in 1957. On the same day he detected his father stealing his shares, Gold saw her wife having an affair with his closest friend in his swimming pool, leading to their divorce in 1972. Hunt died in 2003.
