Jordan Henderson, the 32-year-old England midfielder, was included in the starting lineup for the first time in FIFA World Cup 2022 by manager Gareth Southgate. The Liverpool captain proved his worth by giving the Three Lions a lead in the match in the 38th minute by netting in a goal thanks to a cross by Jude Bellingham.

Former England forward and currently football pundit Gary Lineker was also thrilled with England’s goal. Taking to Twitter, he wrote, “Wooooohoooooo! Great from Kane, superb from Bellingham, marvellous from Henderson. Get in!”

The Anfield Talk, a Liverpool fan account, has taken a dig at Cristiano Ronaldo after Henderson’s goal since the Portugal captain has so far not scored a single goal in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup. They tweeted:

Ronaldo’s eternal rival, Lionel Messi, also had not scored a single goal in the knockout stages of the World Cup until Argentina’s match against Australia in the round of 16, which took the South American powerhouse to the quartefinals of the FIFA World Cup, where they will face the Netherlands.

England captain Harry Kane went on to extend the Three Lions’ lead by scoring from another counterattack in the 48th minute, strengthening their chances of qualifying for the quarterfinals where they will face defending champions France, who defeated Poland with a 3-1 scoreline to book their spot in the quartefinals.

Henderson has played in three FIFA World Cup tournaments so far- 2014, 2018, and 2022. He has till date played 73 matches for England, scoring three goals in the process. Among his goals for England, two have come in crucial knockout encounters. One being in the round of 16 of the 2022 WC vs Senegal, and the other being in the quarterfinal against Ukraine in the 2022 Euro Cup.
