Former Italy and AC Milan star Andrea Pirlo was named as the new coach of Italian football champions Juventus on Saturday, according to a statement released by the club. Pirlo, 41, has replaced  Maurizio Sarri who was sacked after Juventus were knocked out of the Champions League on Friday.

Pirlo has signed a two-year contract with the club.

The 41-year-old has no coaching experience. He held a meeting with Juventus President Andrea Agnelli in Turin on Saturday.

A midfielder, Pirlo began his playing career at Brescia and went on to play for Inter Milan, AC Milan and Juventus before moving in 2015 for two seasons with New York City FC in the MLS.

During his four seasons with Juventus, he won Serie A four times and one Italian Cup. Pirlo made 116 appearances for Italy and was a key figure in the team, which won the 2006 World Cup. He also won two Champions Leagues and two league titles with Milan during his playing career that spanned over 22 years.
