During the first quarter of the New York Jets’ preseason victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, QB Zach Wilson sustained a knee injury. According to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero, quarterback for the New York Jets Zach Wilson’s MRI on August 13 indicated a meniscus tear and a bone bruise in his knee. Pelissero claims that Wilson’s knee has no ligament injury. This puts the 23-year-old’s participation in Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season in uncertainity.
In the event that Wilson fails to start in Week 1, the Jets have the following three quarterbacks in their roster to choose from:
1. Joe Flacco:
Wilson would most probably be replaced by the 37-year-old Flacco if he had to miss the start of the regular season.
Career: Games Played: 2, Pass Yards – 41269, Td – 227, Int – 144, Cmp% – 61.7%
2021: Games Played: 144, Pass Yards – 338, Td – 3, Int – 0, Cmp% – 64.3%
2. Mike White:
White also is in contention to replace the QB. He started the regular 2021 season after starting QB Wilson went down with an injury early in the second quarter of a game against the New England Patriots in Week 7. He became the first Jets quarterback to throw for 400 yards or more since Vinny Testaverde in 2000, and the only quarterback in the NFL since Cam Newton to accomplish so in his first professional start.
Career: Games Played: 2, Pass Yards – 953, Td – 5, Int – 8, Cmp% – 66.7%
2021: Games Played: 2, Pass Yards – 953, Td – 5, Int – 8, Cmp% – 66.7%
3. Chris Streveler:
He was just signed by the Jets on July 26, 2022, and is unlikely to start.
Career: Games Played: 7, Pass Yards – 141, Td – 1, Int – 1, Cmp% – 68%
2021: Games Played: 2, Pass Yards – 36, Td – 0, Int – 0, Cmp% – 66.7%
The Jets are convinced that Wilson will improve following a challenging first season and have high expectations for him in his second season. The whole focus of their offseason was Wilson. They improved the supporting cast in the hope that the QB’s performance would improve. In a matter of five days, this was the team’s second significant injury after Mekhi Becton, a right tackle, broke his kneecap during practise. He will likely miss the rest of the season. Duane Brown was acquired by the Jets to take his position.
