Real Madrid was held by Osasuna to a scoreless draw at home on
Wednesday. The result left four teams tied for the lead on the La Liga table.
Madrid was coming off a win over Barcelona in the “clásico”
at the Camp Nou Stadium on Sunday but failed to take advantage of the Sevilla
draw. Los Blancos were in control from the start but just could not capitalize on its
opportunities.
Karim Benzema had one of the best chances for the hosts when
his shot from close range hit the crossbar in the second half.
Before the start of the game, Osasuna were placed sixth on
the La Liga table. The team had won four of its last six matches before coming
to the Santiago Bernabeau.
“We wanted to take advantage that Barcelona lost and Sevilla
drew, but it was not possible. We tried everything but the ball wouldn’t go
in,” Madrid defender Dani Carvajal was quoted as saying by the Associated
Press.
Sevilla couldn’t manage more than a 1-1 result at Mallorca, which
means they have the same number of points as Madrid. Antonio Sánchez opened the
scoring for Mallorca in the first half and Erik Lamela equalized for visiting
Sevilla after halftime.
Real Betis joined the top of the pile with a 4-1 win over
Valencia, riding on a brace by Borja Iglesias. It was the third straight league
win for the team coached by Manuel Pellegrini.
Real Sociedad also
has 21 points atop the standings. Sociedad
is scheduled to play against Celta Vigo away on Thursday.
Madrid’s arch-rivals Barcelona sacked their coach Ronald Koeman after yet another loss in La Liga, this time to newly-promoted Rayo Vallecano.
