Lionel Messi was paraded on the pitch by Argentine players after winning the FIFA World Cup 2022 by beating France at Lusail Stadium on Sunday. He won Argentina their first World Cup since the great Diego Maradona lifted it back in 1986.

Messi also received the Golden Ball award for being the best player of the Qatar World Cup. Argentina and Aston Villa goalie Dibu Martinez won the golden glove for being the best goalkeeper of the tournament, while Enzo Fernandez won the young player of the tournament award.
French star Kylian Mbappe, who scored a hattrick in the final, won the Golden Boot for scoring the most number of goals in the Qatar World Cup. He was consoled by the French president Emmanuel Macron as he broke down on the pitch following the loss.
The final match was a thrilling contest between the two teams and perhaps the best World Cup final in the modern era. Argentina got a 2-0 lead before half-time thanks to goals by Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria. They held on to the lead till the 80th minute when Mbappe scored the first equalizer for France.

Exactly one minute later, he scored another and the scores at Lusail were level. The match went into extra time and after a goalless first half, Messi gave Argentina the lead in the 108th minute and 10 minutes later Mbappe scored again to level it.
The match went into penalties, from where a couple of great saves by Martinez ensured that Argentina would lift the trophy.
