Lionel Messi has said that he will not retire from international football. He made the announcement after he won the FIFA World Cup 2022 with Argentina beating France in the final at Lusail Stadium on Sunday.

“I’m not retiring from the National Team. I want to continue playing as a champion,” Messi told the Argentine journalist Gaston Edul while Edul was interviewing him after the win.

The FIFA World Cup was the only trophy missing from the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s cabinet till December 18.

He has won everything there is in football at the club level and with the win today at Lusail he has sealed the sport as the greatest of all time – a debate in which he and Cristiano Ronaldo were compared for the last 15 years. 

The win is big for Argentina as a nation as well because they have not won the World Cup since Diego Maradona’s famous 1986 win. For them, the new generation superstar has lived up to the former great Maradona’s legacy and won their country a FIFA World Cup.

Messi also won the golden boot in the tournament – the award for the best player in the tournament. Enzo Fernandez won the best young player of the tournament award while Emiliano Martinez won the golden gloves for being the best goalkeeper in the whole tournament. 

Kylian Mbappe, on the other hand, went home with the golden boot for having the most goals in the FIFA World Cup 2022.
